player
Players refer to roles in a game. For example, in chess, the players can be referred to as white and black, after the color of the tokens they control.
tokens
Tokens refer to pieces that can be moved around in a game. Tokens can have any number of sides >= 1. Cards are a particular type of token that has 2 sides. In a traditional board game, a token would be any physical piece, like chess pieces, meeples, coins, and cards.
containers
Containers refer to positions that tokens can occupy in a game. In a card game, the positions might include the draw deck, discard deck, player hands, and player play areas.
